At the heart of Rafael Patarroyo’s work lies a conviction: the support itself can become a pictorial language.

A Franco‑Colombian visual artist based in Tours, he develops a practice in which painting remains central, yet the form of the support — a metal structure shaped by the artist — becomes an active element of creation. The metal rod is not a sculpture: it is an armature, a preparatory architecture, a skeleton of meaning on which Rafael stretches a linen canvas to create a new pictorial support.

Once stretched, the canvas adopts the form, curves, tightens and breathes. It becomes a living surface, a territory where painting can unfold differently. In this space, painting is no longer confined to the traditional rectangle: it adapts to the form, dialogues with it, and reveals it.

It is within this interaction between structural support, stretched canvas, and pictorial gesture that the concept developed by the artist emerges: Artistic Polysemy.

Like the polysemy of a word, a single artwork can contain multiple simultaneous readings. The form of the support, the tension of the canvas and the pictorial matter become vectors of meaning that overlap, respond to one another and sometimes contradict each other. The viewer is no longer facing a simple painted surface: they are facing a presence, a form that questions them, invites them to look twice, to move around the work, to reconsider what they believe they see.

Artistic Polysemy is not a fixed theory: it is a living process. It is embodied in each piece, in each constructed support, in each stretched canvas, in each pictorial gesture. It questions the boundary between reality and illusion, between what is shown and what is revealed when one approaches, when one accepts to cross the limits of the visible.

Rafael Patarroyo’s works possess a physical presence that engages the viewer’s body. They oscillate between painting and volume, between tension and breathing, between matter and light. They compose a singular pictorial universe in which painting is no longer merely seen: it is inhabited by the form that carries it.
